In July 1961, the Liberty Bell 7 splashed down into the Atlantic ocean after a short, suborbital flight. While rescue crews were able to save the capsule's pilot, Gus Grissom, the capsule itself sunk to the ocean floor.

On July 20, 1999, one day shy of the 38th anniversary of the flight, the capsule was recovered from the Atlantic and brought to Kansas where the Cosmosphere cleaned it and sent it on a national tour through September 15, 2006. The Liberty Bell 7 is now a permanent fixture in the Cosmosphere museum.
